The hexagram 58 of the I Ching, Joy, consists of the repetition of the Lake trigram. The Lake is Water in its role of supporting life and aiding in the development of culture. It has therefore the joy as its attribute. This is reinforced by the overall form of the hexagram whose lines draws a smiling mouth. As smile is communicative, we may come to understand the importance of joy as a notable force that operates in a productive and contagious way.
