I Ching Hexagram 49
The hexagram 49 of the I Ching, Revolution, consists of the Lake over Fire. It does not relate simply two antagonistic forces, as in the case of Fire and Water, because the Lake introduces the specific problem of how to establish a meeting point. Opposition concerns then what must and what cannot create reunion. When there is not only a mere opposition, but a real conflict of elements which cannot share a common fate, a revolution becomes necessary. The strength of the forces at play indicates the need for revolution, as well as the need to postpone it as much as possible. It is only when the forces are sufficiently mature that one can truly engage in such a dangerous enterprise.
Quick guide for interpretation
When there is no other way left, we must engage all our forces in the project of a radical transformation.
