I Ching Hexagram 47
The hexagram 47 of the I Ching, Oppression, consists of the Lake at the top and Water at bottom. It shows the image of a completely empty Lake. The image of a Lake drained of its water depicts an oppressive situation in which energy is exhausted. The hexagram describes then the exhaustion of all possibilities. However, this image has not the single meaning of a deep problem. As oppression is a distinctive trait of the situation, it also indicates the attitude to adopt to face it. In a situation which oppresses us thoroughly, the hexagram advises us to do nothing. This is not the same as being completely dominated by obstacles, but an inner effort to do: that of consciously conforming to the situation. This may awaken us to the springing of other possibilites.
